About the Event
Bangladesh Maritime Law Society (BMLS), a member of CMI – Comité Maritime International, is inclined to its mission of introducing law students across Bangladesh to the world of maritime law by organizing short certificate courses at various universities. In the series, BMLS, in collaboration with Independent University, Bangladesh, and with technical support from MCLaw Services Ltd, conducted a ‘Special Short Certificate Course’ titled Introduction to Maritime Industry, Law, and Practice on 21–22 November 2024.
Dr. Borhan Uddin Khan, Advisor, Department of Law, Independent University, Bangladesh (IUB) was the Special Guest of Inaugural Ceremony and the persons on dais included Dr. Mahbubur Rahman, the Head of Department of Law, IUB, Dr. Mohammad Nazmuzzaman Bhuian, the Dean, School of Law, Independent University, Bangladesh who formally opened the event with his welcoming speech. Dr. Assaduzzaman Assad, Professor, Department of Law, IUB, Advocate Shweata Mishra, Head of Chambers, MCLaw Services Ltd and Engr. Ataur Rahman, Ex-Senior Surveyor, DNV.GL
In the Inaugural Ceremony, the President of BMLS, Mr. Mohiuddin Abdul Kadir (Capt. MAK) FNI FCILT FCIArb, Advocate, Supreme Court of Bangladesh delivered a compelling speech inspiring the aspiring law students. He shared his invaluable insights paving the way to become a maritime lawyer. Not only that, but also, he mentioned about One Bangladesh, a non-political and non-government movement created to attain an egalitarian society and to promote harmony among people of all background and ethnicities within Bangladesh.
Advocate Kadir, delivered first Session of Special Short Certificate Course, on the topic of ‘Introduction to Admiralty Law and Maritime Claims’.
The second Session was taken by Engr. Ataur Rahman on the topic of ‘Introduction to IMO Convention and its Implementation’.
The participants had interactive sessions with the course instructors and the questions raised by them, envisaged their passion for learning Maritime Law.
On the Second Day of the Course, Advocate Shweata Mishra, Head of Chambers, MCLaw Services Ltd., took two sessions on the topics of ‘Introduction to Shipping and Shipping Documents’ and ‘Introduction to Marine Insurance’.
The third session was conducted by Mr. Mohiuddin Abdul Kadir (Capt. MAK) FNI FCILT FCIArb, Advocate, Supreme Court of Bangladesh and President of BMLS, delivered an interactive presentation on the topic of ‘International Trade, INCOTERMS and Carriage of Goods’.
The event came to an end with an encouraging speech and certificate giving by the Hon’ble Chief Guest of Closing Ceremony, Mr. Justice AFM Abdur Rahman (Retd.), Former Justice of Admiralty Court of High Court Division of Supreme Court of Bangladesh and the persons on dais included, Mr. Mohiuddin Abdul Kadir (Capt. MAK) FNI FCILT FCIArb, Advocate, Supreme Court of Bangladesh and President of BMLS; Dr. Mohammad Nazmuzzaman Bhuian, the Dean, School of Law, Independent University, Bangladesh (IUB) who delivered the vote of thanks; Advocate Shweata Mishra, Head of Chambers, MCLaw Services Ltd and Co-ordinator of BMLS, who delivered her closing remark in the Closing Ceremony respectively; and Dr. Assaduzzaman Assad, Professor, Department of Law, IUB.
