Comité Maritime International (CMI)
An institution dedicated to international maritime law is the Comité Maritime International (CMI). The CMI, which was established in Antwerp in 1897, seeks to harmonize maritime law globally. It is the second most significant maritime organization after the IMO and the first and oldest continuously functioning international organization devoted to maritime law.
International Maritime Organization (IMO)
The International Maritime Organization (IMO) is a specialized agency of the United Nations responsible for regulating global shipping to ensure safety, security, and environmental sustainability. Established in 1948 and headquartered in London, United Kingdom, the IMO develops and enforces international maritime conventions, including the SOLAS Convention (Safety of Life at Sea), MARPOL (Marine Pollution), and the STCW Convention (Standards of Training, Certification, and Watchkeeping for Seafarers). As the primary global authority on maritime affairs, the IMO works with member states, industry stakeholders, and legal experts to create uniform regulations that govern vessel operation, pollution prevention, and maritime security. Through its committees and subcommittees, the IMO continuously updates its legal framework to address emerging challenges, such as climate change, automation, and cybersecurity in shipping. With 175 member states and three associate members, the IMO serves as the key platform for international cooperation, ensuring the safe and efficient movement of maritime trade while upholding environmental and safety standards.

International Malaysian Society of Maritime Law (IMSML)
The International Malaysian Society of Maritime Law (IMSML), established in 2016, is dedicated to advancing Malaysian maritime and arbitration laws and practices, while fostering cross-border exchanges of ideas and ideals. Serving as a valuable platform for sharing knowledge, information, and experience on maritime and shipping issues, both domestic and international, IMSML endeavors to educate its members, facilitate networking, and develop skills and expertise to collectively benefit the maritime community. The society organizes various programs and events, including annual conferences, regular interaction series with local and overseas presenters, and publishes newsletters to keep members informed. Membership is open to individuals from any profession or industry with an interest in maritime and shipping law issues.
